It’s an incredible case of police bungling that left the prime suspect in the murder of a beautiful young woman roaming the streets for 42 years.

On a cold September evening in 1969, 20-year-old Anne Zappelli left her friends at a drive-in near Geraldton in Western Australia, to walk back into town.

Passing motorists later witnessed two men slow down near Anne, and one even saw them stop and get out – but none of them stopped to help.

Anne Zappelli was never seen alive again.

Two days later, her bruised and battered body was found just 1.5km from the drive-in.

A series of errors by investigators meant that the two prime suspects were never held to account.

So how did police get it so wrong?

This story originally aired in 2012.
